Webinar Discussing How Lyme Disease Affects Children to Be Held Aug. 27 and Hosted by Quidel Corporation

Quidel Corporation

Summer is Lyme disease season; and while no age group is immune from potential infection, the disproportionate incidents in children is a stark reality that needs addressing. In response to this troubling fact, an important webinar focused on how Lyme disease affects the pediatric patient population will be held on Thursday, Aug. 27. The free webinar is part of an ongoing series hosted by Quidel, the California-based diagnostic health care manufacturer known for successfully developing rapid diagnostic health solutions. Conducting the webinar will be Robert A. Dracker, M.D., medical director at Summerwood Pediatrics and Infusacare Medical Services in Liverpool, New York. Dr. Dracker currently serves as chair of the heart, lung and cancer committee for the Medical Society of New York State and is a board member of the Office of Professional Conduct for the New York State Department of Health. Since 2014 he has been a member of the Pediatric Advisory Committee of the FDA and served as chairman of the committee from 2018-2019. The Aug. 27 webinar will discuss how Lyme disease presents in children (often flu-like symptoms including fever, chills, malaise and headache), how it progresses and tick-exposure management. Also discussed will be how to test for Lyme disease, including the innovative Sofia 2 Lyme FIA test. This in-office test provides a patient as well as physicians with indicative results within minutes as opposed to days, which has historically been the norm. “Disease presentation in children is extremely variable and may present with confounding symptoms, suggestive of various other infectious or rheumatologic illnesses,” said Dr. Dracker. “Confounding the challenge is that most patients and their parents never remember or notice a tick bite, since most are nymph related. But the reality is that, for the most part, children are more engaged on a regular basis than are adults in outside activities that could expose them to tick bites, which is why being on guard and testing for Lyme disease is so important.” Among those expected to attend the webinar are pediatricians, representatives of physician office laboratories, urgent care centers and any other allied health professionals or health care researchers interested in hearing the latest regarding the prevalence of Lyme disease in children. The free, Aug. 27 webinar will take place from noon-1 p.m. (EDT). To register, visit quidel.com/webinars . How EMDR positively changed my focus

Virtual EMDR

Way, way back in the ancient times of 2017, fewer than half of Americans reporting a mental health issue were receiving treatment, according to a study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. With COVID-19, its devastating economic fallout, and a corrosive election season filling up 2020, that gap is only getting worse. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll in May found that nearly half of Americans responded they were having mental health issues in the wake of COVID-19, and 19% said it was having a major impact on their life. That means tens of millions more Americans are failing to access mental health treatments that could improve their lives. Unfortunately, even before this virus came along, many of us had our COVID-19 equivalent moments lingering inside our brains, years after a trauma. I can tell you one of mine. It may not be the worst memory I’ve had to deal with, but it was so vivid that it was literally in flames. I could not stop remembering how my father made me sit down in front of the fireplace and watch him as he methodically burned my favorite toys, one by one. Imagine the kind of household where this was not the most surprising development. Growing up, I was subjected to physical and sexual violence, from narcissistic, alcoholic (not alcoholic, say “addicted”) parents who seemed to think their main job was scrambling my brain for life. For decades, I let them succeed, channeling bewilderment and fear and rage into binge eating and substance abuse. When my past trauma was triggered by current events or thoughts, I’d be driving down the road pounding my steering wheel and screaming at the top of my lungs. Or fantasizing about pounding a brick wall with my fists until I had nothing left but bloody stumps where my hands used to be -- anything to replace the greater pain inside my head. Believe me, as I grew older and remained haunted by this crushing past, I tried the most obvious mental health remedies. I tried talk therapy. It didn’t work for me. I know it brings relief and insight to a great many people -- for me, I was simply spending my self-reflective time sharpening images of my childhood I really needed to blur or erase if I wanted to move on. I knew perfectly well what was bad in my former life. What I really needed to do was find a way to move beyond it. I had another more immediate problem: A family member I was still close to had a life-threatening illness, and an absolutely crippling fear of flying would keep me away unless I tried something new. A friend going through serious troubles of his own asked me if I’d ever heard about “EMDR,” shorthand for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. I didn’t know anything about it, but was willing to try. I went to an in-person session with a therapist trained in EMDR, and the results were both immediate and long-lasting. The premise of EMDR is that you allow yourself to focus momentarily on the trauma or the memories bothering you, then use guided eye-movement or hand-movement techniques to stimulate other parts of the brain that help process the memories in less traumatic ways. While researchers still debate the actual brain mechanisms that achieve the result, study after meta-study has shown EMDR to be at least as effective for many patients as prescriptions, older exposure therapies and other treatments. What makes online EMDR infinitely more valuable than those other treatments, especially in our times of forced isolation and lockdown, is that it can be done by you, and just you, at home, without expensive or difficult-to-arrange help. It’s almost as if EMDR was designed knowing our enforced-virtual lifestyle was coming. Therapist-led, in-person EMDR is still the right option for some clients. With EMDR and other exposure therapies, no one should tell you what works best for you -- you can decide that. But there are more people than ever, millions in fact, who either physically can’t leave home or work to drive to a $150-an-hour therapy session, or can’t afford it. And personal trauma is too important to be left untreated to that kind of societal failure. It was my personal need that led to an online solution. We designed, with the help of trained therapists, academicians and software experts, a Virtual EMDR program you sign into from the comfort and security of your home or favorite place. You control when, how fast or slow, how often and how long or short sessions should be that work best for you. It’s inexpensive, it’s convenient, and it works. Ninety-five percent of our subscribers say they feel better and are recommending the service to others. That’s a lot of healing, and we’re very proud of that, and humbled by the challenge of bringing it to more people. The Veterans Affairs Department is now using MDR, and we’ve given away access to more than 1,500 veterans and law enforcement personnel. It’s easy to try. Read up on EMDR all you can, there’s plenty of good, credible information and backing research available online. Then try it out. It’s the most risk-free jump toward better mental health that you can find anywhere. No searching for a “good” therapist. No worries about cost. No three-hour round trip to drive, get therapy, get home. No paying for six months of getting to know your therapist and figuring out if they will help. If Virtual EMDR doesn’t help, dropping it is as easy as a mouse click. Since COVID-19 hit, the American Psychological Association estimates 91% of therapists nationwide are now doing sessions via telehealth, with the great majority of those not meeting clients in-person. It’s a very short step from there to Virtual EMDR, where the software and careful research by experts leads you through the session without a therapist. If there is any benefit to this pandemic, it seems to me that far more people are willing to open up about their anxiety, trauma and depression, and to seek help. We encourage you to do that in any way that feels comfortable and effective. My own life has turned around -- I wish the same for everyone who has ever tried to put their past in the right perspective. Jeff Tejcek is founder and co-creator of VirtualEMDR.com, an eye movement therapy system offering treatment for anxiety, depression, PTSD, addictions and more. Virtual EMDR provides online behavioral health resources for individuals struggling with depression, trauma, anxiety, fear, PTSD and addiction through a unique, self-guided platform designed by therapists and mental health experts using the EMDR, eye movement desensitization reprocessing, technique. In providing more than 15,000 successful sessions overall, Virtual EMDR has helped numerous members of law enforcement, medical first responders and military veterans. The need for virtual resources like Virtual EMDR has grown through necessity during the pandemic. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found nearly half of Americans see the coronavirus crisis harming their mental health and calls to a federal emergency hotline for emotional distress shot up more than 1,000 percent in April. VirtualEMDR.com opens access to clinically-proven techniques in eye movement desensitization and processing (EMDR) straight to the comfort and convenience of your home, at prices that remove barriers to vital mental health self-care. Now more than ever, Americans suffering from past trauma and current anxiety need therapist-designed techniques they can access safely from comfortable places at convenient times, without requiring an in-person therapist for guidance. Virtual EMDR is delivering that to thousands of people every month. “Our clients report remarkable improvements in mood, attitude and ability to function with family, friends and coworkers after completing just 1-3 short sessions with Virtual EMDR’s self-guided programs,” said Virtual EMDR founder Jeff Tejcek. “At a time when people are feeling isolated and anxious about the future, we’re happy to bring highly affordable EMDR services anywhere and everywhere so people can take advantage of their proven techniques.” For the great majority of Americans currently suffering from higher levels of stress and anxiety, though, the self-guided, affordable and private sessions offered by Virtual EMDR can be life changing. A Virtual EMDR user said: “Virtual EMDR has absolutely helped, I think I’d still be feeling pretty messed up now if not for it. Definitely the weight of the things that were haunting me have significantly lifted, and I'm using it to work through any further anxieties/paranoias I'm finding myself experiencing day to day.” - LX Xander Virtual EMDR guides users at their own pace through a series of techniques, illustrations, videos and more, all designed on eye movement therapies proven over decades of research and consumer response. Virtual EMDR, the largest online provider of these techniques, is secure and confidential, following all HIPAA protocols for privacy. Virtual EMDR therapy access starts at $69 a month for unlimited sessions -- some people choose a session once a week, others find benefit once a day. That’s one of the major advantages of the Virtual EMDR plan, allowing those in need total control over the time, place and duration of the techniques that work best for them. Over thousands of client sessions analyzed by Virtual EMDR, more than half were completed in 30 minutes or less, compared to the hours per session needed to travel to and complete in-person EMDR therapy sessions. Earlier this week, four of the world’s top pole vault champions competed head-to-head in Fine’s first ever live steam competition. Over 2.5 million viewers world-wide, watched a spectacular display of athleticism and skill at the global live stream pole vaulting competition by Fine Hygienic Holding (FHH), one of the world’s leading wellness groups and manufacturers of hygienic paper products. This was the first time that the athletes have competed wearing masks, with the aim to raise awareness on safety at this time. Philippine’s EJ Obiena came second with a height of 5.60 meters. AVMA Virtual Convention Offers Latest in Veterinary Issues The AVMA Conference August 20-22 features pet and Veterinary trends among which will be COVID and cannabis and its effect on pets; use in medicine; etc. AVMA tips and info on these topics can be found HERE . Speakers include current and future AVMA Presidents Dr. John Howe (COVID) and Dr. Douglas Kratt (Cannabis). Note that the ASPCA reports an over 700% increase in hotline calls due to the ingestion of edibles in pets. Also among the speakers is Dr. Tracey McNamara, DVM, DACVP, who helped identify West Nile Virus when she worked at the Bronx Zoo and is now sounding the alarm on the need for more biosurveillance to detect impending disease outbreaks in animals before they spill over to humans. While we're monitoring for COVID in both domestic animals and humans, wildlife has gone unmonitored. There are outbreaks of West Nile in these animals that is becoming more of an issue and can spread to humans. There is very little research on this--and this could possibly be the cause of the next pandemic and a threat to many species. In spite of repeated wake up calls, dogs, cats, shelter animals, zoos and local wildlife, all species that can and have given early warning of emerging public health threats, continue to be left out of any formal surveillance in the United States. ### Contact Details Wendy Gordon +1 202-412-6268 wendy@flashprdc.com Company Website https://www.avma.org/events/avma-convention

InterAct Unveils Addiction Support Platform to Address Opioid Crisis in Rural America

Convey Services

InterAct LifeLine , today launched the InterAct Opioid Resource Platform , an addiction education knowledgebase designed to support Rural Health Initiatives at the federal, state and local level. The Opioid Resource Platform delivers patient and family support tools and telehealth resources to provide relief from the opioid crisis in rural communities where access to treatment is often unavailable. The InterAct platform complies with HIPAA regulations and ADA accessibility and is custom branded for state, regional, municipal or school districts, along with private treatment programs. Each portal is connected to a centralized online library populated with current educational resources on a wide range of drug-related topics, family support and wellness strategies. Community organizations can use the InterAct Opioid Resource Platform to connect and refer individuals to local resources, community contacts and virtual support groups. “The Rural Opioid Crisis has brought increasing levels of addiction and overdose deaths to America’s heartland, while the resources needed to support families facing addiction rarely reaches beyond the urban centers,” said Carolyn Bradfield , CEO & founder of InterAct. “COVID-19 is only making this worse as overdoses increased 18% in March, 29 % in April and 42 % in May according to a July 2020 Washington Post article. The use of technology to provide more services to people suffering with the disease of addiction, in both urban and rural areas has been glaringly absent. The InterAct Opioid Resource Platform can be rolled out and managed by federal, state or county organizations who can direct and focus the content and resources available at every level.” In addition to parent and family educational content and access to localized services, the InterAct Opioid Resource Platform interfaces with Medicaid/Medicare supported telehealth services for online psychiatric and psychological counseling. Professionally moderated group sessions are available online to provide expanded support to rural communities when geography, mobility or personal presence is restricted. Monitored regional public forums let users ask questions and receive feedback from their peers or professionals. Portals can also provide fund raising tools and sponsorship opportunities to make them financially self-sufficient. “Rural America continues to take the brunt of the opioid crisis, with minimal access to resources and services, coupled with out of control addiction rates,” added Bradfield. “Families bear the burden of trying to support an adolescent or adult family member facing addiction, but they are the last to receive any education or counseling. Fighting COVID has diverted funding and public attention away from the Opioid Crisis, while rural America continues to address this decade-long addiction pandemic. The Opioid Crisis will still be here when COVID is contained, and the death toll will continue to mount.” According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) , “Rates of drug overdose deaths are rising in rural areas, surpassing rates in urban areas. Although the percentage of people reporting illicit drug use is lower in rural areas, the effects of use appear to be higher. In 2017, more than 70,000 people died from drug overdoses, making it a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. Of those deaths, almost 68% involved a prescription or illicit opioid. About InterAct LifeLine Founded in 2019 by Carolyn Bradfield following the overdose death of her daughter, InterAct is a technology telehealth platform delivering education and content on addiction and wellness strategies to promote recovery, connections to community through discussion forums and virtual support groups, and continuous outreach to its members. InterAct’s portal technology is integrated with a HIPAA compliant mobile platform offering applications to families to engage individuals, organize their schedule with reminders and check ins, send secure messages and monitors vital signs through wearables to detect risk for overdose. InterAct’s technology produces detailed data used for treatment program outcomes studies. For information visit www.interactlifeline.com , info@interactlifeline.com or call 866-274-7539.
