New Survey Shows the Next Generation Embraces Remote Work for Transition from University to Career in UK

A survey released today by Velocity Global, the leading provider of global talent solutions, shows that U.K. university-aged adults embrace remote work in their career transition plans. The University to Career Survey examined 500 university-aged respondents’ attitudes on remote work as they prepare to transition into the workforce. “The next generation wants more flexibility in their work arrangements, whether that is the option of working entirely remote or in a hybrid work model, to allow them to strike a better balance between their ‘personal’ lives and their ‘work’ lives,” said Sarah Fern, chief people officer at Velocity Global. “Students want the ability to work with anyone, anywhere, anytime. If employers are going to recruit the best people entering the marketplace, they would be wise to take these desires into account in their hiring and employment practices.” Key findings on remote work: 72% of respondents are to consider a job that is remote 84% of students would consider taking less money for their job if it allowed a remote option The majority (59%) say being remote increases their productivity 9 out of 10 respondents report work-life balance as being either the most important factor (44%) or a somewhat important factor (48%) in selecting a career Fewer than 1 in 5 (16%) prefer to work from an office five days per week Only half (50%) of respondents plan to have a traditional (Monday-Friday, 9-to-5) in-person job, and 1 out of 4 (24%) never expect to hold a traditional office job Impacts on emotional well-being: The survey also found a large impact on the emotional well-being of respondents as a result of the move to remote work and learning due to COVID-19. 63% of respondents acknowledged remote work/study negatively impacted their mental health “a lot” (14%) or “somewhat” (49%) 85% reported a high level of stress or anxiety about entering the workforce, including 30% who indicated they are “very” anxious about entering the workforce, and an additional 55% said they are “somewhat” anxious about doing so Participation in the gig economy: An overwhelming majority of students intend to supplement their primary job with a side gig. 82% of respondents either definitely (20%) or possibly (62%) expect to have a side gig in addition to their primary job “It’s clear that the traditional workforce in the U.K. needs to adapt with this growing trend towards flexibility,” said Fern. “People are telling us how they will succeed, and it includes full-time, part-time, contract, and freelance work. Employers will be more likely to recruit and retain the best people when they incorporate these lessons into their hiring strategies.” Methodology: This survey was conducted on behalf of Velocity Global by Rep Data. Poster for the HKBU Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Gala Online Concert Dubbed “ A Lovers’ Reunion ”, the Concert echoes the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s reunification with the motherland. As the first human-machine collaborative performance of its kind in the world, the Concert will give the audience a brand new symphonic experience driven by the integration of cutting-edge AI technologies. The AI technologies developed for this performance are provided by researchers from HKBU’s Augmented Creativity Lab led by Professor Guo Yike, Vice-President (Research and Development). Professor Guo is the project leader of a research project entitled “ Building Platform Technologies for Symbiotic Creativity in Hong Kong ” – a HK$52.8 million research fund awarded by the Theme-based Research Scheme (11th round) under the Research Grants Council (RGC) for a period of five years. Another highlight of the Concert is a ballet performance featuring AI virtual dancers in Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, accompanied live by the HKBU Symphony Orchestra. The ideas for the choreography come from the natural world, which provides dance movements inspired by a newly discovered species of box jellyfish in Hong Kong. In collaboration with professional dancers from the Hong Kong Dance Company, the AI-generated dancers have been trained to perform the ballet with movement-data collected by HKBU scientists. Robotics Team Earns Top Awards at National NASA Competition

Competing against dozens of renowned four-year universities, the College of DuPage Robotics Team, an offshoot of the College’s Engineering and Technology Club, earned two top awards at NASA's Robotic Mining Competition, Lunabotics, held earlier this month at the Kennedy Space Center. The team placed third in Caterpillar Autonomy, which came with a $750 award from the Caterpillar Corporation, and earned Special Recognition in Systems Engineering. Both awards are impressive feats demonstrating a high level of difficulty, said COD Physics Professor and Robotics Team Faculty Advisor Tom Carter. “To place in the top three at the same level as a robotics powerhouse like the University of Alabama is truly impressive. It is all the more remarkable when you consider that this year both the team and the robot were built brand new from the ground up,” he said. The competition involved designing and building a robot to dig through a simulated lunar surface to deposit as much gravel simulant as possible in two 15-minute runs. In order to qualify, teams were required to deposit at least a kilogram of the gravel in the depiction sieve. “The fact that COD’s robot could get to the other side of the pit and back was a pretty big accomplishment,” Carter said. “I’d guess about half to two thirds of the robots either fell into a hole or dug themselves into a hole.” Robotics Team Captain Gabe Wozniak said he is proud of the effort his team put into the robot’s entire system and the success they achieved in their first year in the national competition. “Because of HVACR Professor Bob Clark’s advice, the difference we pushed for this year was getting more team members involved in actively contributing to the robot’s development,” said Wozniak. “All team members went above and beyond to ensure our success in the competition, and that is not an exaggeration. I am privileged to have been able to lead such a fine group.” In addition to Wozniak, this year’s Robotics team includes Abdullah Ali, Brenda Amador, Josef Brania, Oliver Burrus, Stavros Dellis, Zachary Egert, Anjanette Francisco, John Greager, Maxwell Harris, Faiza Khan, Nayal Merchant, Soka Suliman, Jaden Tran, Nick Vasquez, Elijah Wilkinson and Giovanni Zavalza. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only 10 team members were able to attend the competition: Brania, Burrus, Dellis, Egert, Greager, Harris, Merchant, Wilkinson, Wozniak and Zavalza. Overseeing the build of this year’s robot was COD Machining Advisor Bill Toldness. “COD provided a state-of-the-art manufacturing lab, but it was all student-led,” he said. “The enthusiasm and tenacity amongst the students were the key. Stupid Cancer and its Board of Directors is committed to the empowerment of people affected by adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer. As patient advocacy organizations serving AYA patients, we join the medical community in fully renouncing any efforts to limit or remove access to safe abortion care. Abortion is a safe and essential healthcare right. Patients with cancer may face many difficult choices in their treatment journey. Patients who learn of a cancer diagnosis during pregnancy often must choose between continuing pregnancy (delaying essential life-saving treatments) and termination of pregnancy. Surgeries or medical treatment for cancer that could also result in loss of pregnancy would be considered abortion under certain state laws. This threatens the patient’s ability to receive cancer care in a timely fashion. Additionally, the continued interference of state legislatures into individuals’ personal healthcare decisions undermines the principles of the patient-physician relationship. These decisions are personal and should be made by patients in discussion with their medical team and not limited by legal consideration. Changes occurring in state laws ( Texas SB8, Oklahoma HB4327 ) and the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States regarding Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization raise grave concerns regarding access to abortion care in this country. Multiple leading medical organizations including American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) 1, Society for Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) 2, American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) 3, North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (NASPAG) and Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM) have denounced the opinions of this ruling. Given trigger laws in effect in at least 25 states, swift and immediate loss of abortion access is expected. A joint statement from NASPAG/SAHM 4 outlines how these changes would affect adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients in particular. AYA patients undergoing cancer care often consider options for preserving their fertility prior to cancer therapies, including freezing embryos. Given the confusion and misconceptions that anti-abortion legislation has caused and more recent bans starting with fertilization, we also have grave concerns that these laws and those that follow will limit the ability of patients to access fertility preservation techniques and have control over reproductive decision making of their stored tissue in the future. Finally, given misconceptions about the mechanisms of actions of many of the most effective contraceptive methods (including emergency contraceptives), we have serious concerns about the potential for limitations on AYA patients' access to the best form of contraception for them. We, the undersigned, are patient advocacy nonprofit organizations supporting AYA patients and their loved ones.
